Leanne Tormey: An Advocate for Food Security

Educator and recent non-profit leader, Leanne Tormey, EdD, has built a career focused on serving others through teaching, leadership, and learning. Dr. Leanne Tormey not only served the community in the role of Chief Learning Officer for the Carver Center based in Port Chester, New York, from June 2017 -April of 2020, but she has also served a number of other community organizations over the years, even earning a Volunteer of the Year award from the United Way of Southeastern, Connecticut approximately ten years ago while employed as a Superintendent of Schools in Connecticut.

During Leanne Tormey’s tenure as Superintendent of Schools in Stonington, she became interested in the work of the Gemma E. Moran United Way Food Bank in southeast Connecticut. It was at that time that she participated in the SNAP Challenge, an activity designed to spread awareness of the difficulties encountered by those struggling to feed their families on Food Stamps. With a greater appreciation for those battling food insecurity, Tormey was excited by the prospect of supporting efforts to feed others in her future roles.

Upon joining the Carver Center team in 2017, Leanne Tormey was thrilled to learn about the Carver Center Market – a wonderful self-serve grocery providing a dignified shopping experience for clients in Port Chester. During her tenure at Carver Center, Leanne Tormey worked in partnership with Market staff and the critical staff from Feeding Westchester. As COVID-19 impacted the community in the early months of 2020, additional community partnerships grew to include Caritas and Salvation Army, and together the organizations helped citizens by distributing bags of food and prepared meals.
